"The coursework is a wonderful addition to Fletcher. The readings are relevant, timely, and on a variety of topics in East Asia. It was a well-structured course." - Identity Politics of East Asia (Spring 2024)

"This is definitely one of the best courses I had at Fletcher."
- Identity Politics of East Asia (Spring 2024)

"Teaching structure and discussions are very engaging and helpful in understanding contemporary politics in East Asia. I had no knowledge of the region and now I have a certain familiarity and can engage with news headlines. The professor is also a great resource!" - Identity Politics of East Asia (Spring 2024)

"Brings a unique perspective for a business student by addressing identity politics and understanding the history behind why countries function the way they do." - Identity Politics of East Asia (Spring 2024)

"Professor Hur is an exceptional instructor. [...] she challenges her students to engage with sophisticated concepts but doesn't expect us to be familiar with arcane terminology. Her own theories on nationalism, which she shared throughout the course, are original and thought-provoking. She has genuinely changed the way I think about nations, democracy, and globalization." - Nationalism (Spring 2025)

"Coming out of the overview of research methods first module, I felt disparaged about myself as a student and was very much doubting my ability to learn and engage with research methods. Coming into Professor Hur's class helped rebuild my confidence, and make me feel like a better student. This class was extremely helpful in actually thinking about why we use certain methods and in what cases this would be helpful." - Qualitative and Mixed Methods (Fall 2024)

"I appreciate the enthusiasm and personal investment in ensuring that students understand not just the 'how' but also the why that particular methodologies have strengths and their occasional challenges. Professor Hur exudes professionalism and a passion for teaching." - Qualitative and Mixed Methods (Fall 2024)

"I loved Professor Hur's energy and honesty about the challenges of research design. Her explanations of each of the methodologies were tailored to those of various methodology backgrounds and reflected her ability to teach to a diverse group of students." - Qualitative and Mixed Methods (Fall 2024)

"This class was easily one of the best courses I took during my time at Mizzou. Professor Hur is an expert in her field, and she was able to take complex readings and ideas and make them easy to understand during lectures. I appreciated how she took the time to explain how the readings and ideas related to current political events. Additionally, her tips and strategies for reading academic articles were extremely useful. I found the first section of the class particularly interesting because it challenged my ideas of what a nation is and what nationalism is. When I entered this class, I believed the mainstream idea that nationalism is almost always a bad thing. At the end of this class, I can think critically about the different contexts in which nationalism exists and what the implications of that are. This class gave me the ability to critically think about and discuss nationalism. This is truly an outstanding course." - Nationalism and Democracy (2020 Spring)

"One of the more interesting classes the entire department has to offer. Course material was quite fascinating, and the instructor was really knowledgable and approachable for any help. Always learned something new and valuable from class discussions." - Nationalism and Democracy (2020 Spring)

"The teaching method was really engaging, in particular the Q and A sessions, the group working and presenting the final policy recommendation findings to the class." - The Public and Policy Change (2019 Fall)

Policy Formation and Policy Analysis

Political Participation and Policy

Capstone: Advanced Research Projects in Applied Research

 Student comments

“The class had an appropriate balance of intellectual inquiry mixed in with how it applies to the real world of policymaking. I really feel it enhanced my understanding of the policy world in a holistic way […] Professor Hur is one of the top 3 professors I have learned from at Wagner, and she always went out of her way to make sure we were grasping course materials and conceptually on track with our assignments.” - Policy Formation

"This was one of my favorite classes so far. […] Reading empirical studies and then getting together to discuss them and relate them to current events was brilliant and enriching. I learned so much and am constantly citing these studies in my day to day conversations now.” - Policy Formation

“This class was intellectually stimulating and very well-organized. The readings were interesting and manageable. I liked the focus on full-class discussions, with some breakout into groups for the case studies. Professor Hur clearly prepared well for the class, was deeply familiar with the readings, and facilitated class discussion extremely well.” - Political Participation & Policy

“I appreciated the parts of the class when we were able to apply the theories to real-life case studies. A lot of the theories and readings we studied were very dense and did not make any sense to me until applied to case studies.”  - Political Participation & Policy
